A Walk in the Park
Are you passionate about writing, stories and people?
Back to Ours, in partnership with national literacy charity First Story, is looking for an enthusiastic writer to create a new piece of work based around the wonderful, intriguing and surprising stories that come up in conversations struck up in the park when out dog walking.
The project will take place in East Hull with a focus around East Park, a place where the act of walking, and walking the dog, can take people on a journey into their inner worlds of thought but, more often than not, leads to a café, for a brew and a chat and the sharing of myths, legends and unusual anecdotes from this corner of the city.
An overall narrative may emerge, or these stories may be a series of fragments and snapshots from the lives of individuals. The voice of these people, along with that of the writer, should be at the centre of what is created.
A period of time embedded in East Hull will lead to the creation of a piece of new writing, or a collection of writing, and the nature of how this is then displayed, exhibited, performed or published is flexible.
We’re inviting applications from experienced writers able to demonstrate a track-record in creating work in this way, or who want to develop their practice and have a strong interest in creating bold and exciting work. We’re looking for a writer who’s confident when talking to members of the public and can gather material that informs the creative process in this way.
A shortlist from the submissions will be drawn up by a panel with professional literary and arts experience. The selection of the writer to deliver this project will then be made.
The writer’s fee for this project is £4,000, with additional finance available for the selected artist during any subsequent production process for the realisation of the final piece.
The writer will also deliver a 90-minute workshop with a group of young writers from a secondary school that neighbours East Park.
The selected writer will be announced at a project launch on National Writing Day in Hull on Wednesday 27th June, 2018.
Interested writers should submit an outline proposal for this opportunity along with details of their experience and supporting information to firstname.lastname@example.org by 10am, Monday 11 June.
Good luck! We look forward to receiving your applications.
