Hull’s The Herd are hitting the road with Mr and Mrs Pots, growing a little bit of magic with Back to Ours

If you haven’t seen The Herd’s interactive, colourful show for under 5s yet, then it’s about slime you did (get it?!).

Squelching it’s way firmly into little – and big – people’s hearts since it was first staged at Hull Central Library back in 2018, Slime’s been performed at Back to Ours, Big Malarkey and Edinburgh Fringe as part of the Hull Takeover – and now Slug and Caterpillar are making their way to venues around the North of England, still in pursuit of that tantalising leaf.

But this time they’re joined by Mr and Mrs Pots, two colourful characters spreading a little bit of magic in a new pop-up theatre piece devised in partnership with Back to Ours.

The Herd co-artistic director Ruby Thompson says:

“Creating the Gardener characters with Back to Ours has been a lot of fun.

“It’s allowed us to add an colourful introduction to the world of Slime for families ahead of seeing the show, and spread the word on the streets in an exciting and interactive way.

“It’s also allowed us to play with the scale of our set, creating a model replica including a patch of grass, slug trail, Slug and Caterpillar!”

Mr and Mrs Pots will be popping up in three town centres – Doncaster, Sunderland and Barnsley – ahead of shows, bringing their own unique mischief and magic to the world of Slime; encouraging children to plant the set and grow it into a show is all about getting them excited and involved before they’ve even stepped a foot through a theatre door.

Back to Ours Director Louise Yates adds:

“Slime’s an amazing show – everyone we’ve spoken to who’s experienced it just loves it.

“Back to Ours is all about engaging people in something they might not have encountered before, and this quirky little pop-up theatre piece is just that – spreading a bit of wonder ahead of the show dates.

“Hopefully all our little gardeners will be amazed at just what they can grow with a bit of love and magic!”

 About The Herd

The Herd Theatre make innovative new shows about the world young people live in today. At the heart of everything they make is a collaboration with a group of young people. They play, they create, they share and they listen to understand the experience of being young in 2019.

They believe that theatre for young people is theatre, and that young audiences deserve unique, challenging and entertaining experiences as much as any! They collaborate with exceptional artists to push the expectations of children’s theatre. As well as shows for young people, they work with young people through additional projects exploring perspectives, experiences and imagination through workshops.

Lead Artists Ruby Thompson and Sam Caseley set up the company in 2015, and since then they’ve involved 230 young people directly in our creative process and reached an audience of over 15,000 children in Hull.

The Herd are the Associate Theatre Company of Hull Libraries (Hull Culture and Leisure) and an Affiliated Company with Hull Truck Theatre. | Facebook, twitter & Insta @theherduk
